Alberta Learning Pathways - Courses & Programs
Class 3 License Driver's Training
The class 3 training is up to 20 hours and includes air brakes. You can do it in a week or stretch it out over months up to 3 months.
With a Class 3 license you will be able to drive a single vehicle with three or more axles, or a vehicle with three or more axles towing a trailer with one or more axles (only if the trailer is not equipped with Air Brakes)
Curriculum includes:
- New: Safety Practices
- Hours of Service - Log Books
- Pre & Post Trip Inspections
- National Safety Code
- Rules and Regulations
- Vehicle and Load Documentation
- Maintenance and Servicing
- Driver Training - Practical Application
- In-Class Instruction 8 hours
- In-Cab Instruction – 12-16 (standard transmission)
- In-Yard Instruction – 2-4.00 hours
Students will incur the following expenses:
Driver’s Abstract and License Class Change, both payable to Registry Office.
Admission Requirement:
- 18 years of age or older
- Current Alberta Class 5 Driver’s license, no GDL restriction
- Current driver’s abstract (within 3 months)
- Physically fit
Class 1 License Driver's Training
1) Online portion of course you pay $250 directly on the Government of Alberta Website and it’s 40 hours then you take a written test at the Alberta Registry Office

Verify your account after creating it using your driving license, once created follow the instructions to enroll in the Course
Enroll in ENTRY LEVEL CLASS 1 ONLINE. Pay your $250 fees for the portal.
Then get started with your online modules. We offer Thursday in classroom help free of charge here in the Red Deer Academy for students needing extra help due to language barriers, technical help or other.
2) Core Learning Program 60 Hours (yard 13, classroom 4, in cab 43, airbrakes 8.5)
We cover Employment in the commercial driving Industry

- Cargo Securement and Loss Prevention
- Documents and Paperwork
- Handling Incidents
- Personal Health and Safety
- Air Brake Training
After this you can take your class 1 road test to get a restricted class 1 license allowing you to drive within Alberta only.
3) Competence Building Program
After you complete your Class 1 knowledge and road tests to obtain a restricted class 1 license, you are eligible to enroll in the competence building program.

- Professional driving practices
You don’t take another road test we as a licensed and certified training provider grant you your full north America class 1 after you complete your 17-21 hours with us cultivating deeper driving skills and knowledge.
Experience and Equivalency Program
40 Hours
Accelerated version of the core learning program. Drivers must also complete 8 hours of air brake training is the don’t have their air brake endorsement. To qualify for the EE program, Albertans must submit an application to Transport and Economic Corridors along with supporting documents.
