Why Take a C-TPAT Course?

Jerit Justin • August 11, 2020

If you are a commercial truck driver that transports goods across the US Canada border, then you have no doubt heard about the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) program. C-TPAT was put in place following the 9-11 attacks and the program serves to ensure companies transporting goods across the border implement best security practices.

C-TPAT certification is voluntary and it can be a time-consuming process. Nevertheless, there are several good reasons for drivers to take a C-TPAT Course and get certified.

Access to a supply chain security specialist

C-TPAT certified drivers have access to dedicated supply chain security specialists that can help them resolve any security related issues that they may have. This is especially helpful if you are working with a company that needs to comply with industry specific regulations which can get quite complex.

Faster movement of goods across the border

If you want to improve your fleet’s productivity, one of the best things you can do is to eliminate those long waiting periods at the border crossings. With C-TPAT certification, you and your drivers will experience:

  • Shorter waiting times to cross the border.
  • Access to Free and Secure Trade (FAST) lanes at the North American border crossings.
  • Fewer border inspections.
  • Faster release of cargo at the border.

Priority Consideration

In the event of a terrorist attack or natural disaster, companies with their C-TPAT certification will be the first to be eligible to resume business operations.

Lower Fines

If you do make an error and are faced with a penalty, fines for C-TPAT companies are up to 50% lower than standard rates.

Opportunity for more business

Many companies in North America will only do business with carriers that are C-TPAT certified. This means that by getting yourself certified, you are opening yourself up to more potential business and profitability.

Improved internal security for your business

Through the certification process, you will learn how to secure your company’s data making it less likely that you will be the victim of theft or a security breach. Furthermore, C-TPAT security checks will make it less likely that you will inadvertently hire questionable individuals into your company.
