7 Benefits of Maintenance Training

Jerit Justin • June 1, 2022

Managing a fleet of commercial vehicles can be a challenge, to say the least. There are many things that you have to keep track of in order to make your company’s operations as successful as possible. Ensuring that your fleet manager has the maintenance training that they need is essential. Proper maintenance means your manager is staying on top of things and keeping up with maintenance in a proactive manner rather than simply responding to breakdowns and problems.

Maintenance training has a number of benefits, including:

Better fleet safety

As a fleet manager, safety should always be your top priority. Fleet safety is going to impact every part of your business, from human resources to legal to customer confidence and, ultimately, your bottom line.

And one of the best ways to maintain and improve fleet safety is through maintenance and ensuring that all of your vehicles have properly working brakes, good tires, coupling devices, etc.

Fleet reliability

Whenever a vehicle is off the road for repair or broken down on the side of the road waiting for a tow, your business is missing out on revenue. Performing routine maintenance on a vehicle does take some time as well, but not nearly as much time as major repairs take. Staying on top of maintenance means you’ll have fewer mechanical problems meaning your fleet can spend more time doing its job.

Fewer compliance issues

Ensuring your fleet is well maintained isn’t just a nice thing to do. It’s also the law. Vehicles must meet all safety standards of your jurisdiction as well as any jurisdiction they may be travelling through. With proper maintenance, you will find that you will have fewer compliance issues to worry about.

Lower maintenance costs

While you might think that more maintenance means you’ll be spending more money on maintenance, the opposite is actually true. Preventative maintenance is far less expensive than maintenance that is done only after a problem is discovered. With preventative maintenance, you are more likely to detect minor issues. And this means you can repair those small issues before they become major ones.

Lower fuel costs

With regular maintenance, you are also going to find that your vehicles will have better fuel efficiency, and therefore your fleet will have lower fuel costs. Better fuel efficiency can be gained through maintenance, such as maintaining the tires and wheels and doing the oil and filter changes on the right schedule.

In fact, according to Automotive Fleet Magazine, regular maintenance can improve a fleet’s fuel efficiency by as much as 40%!

Driver satisfaction

By taking care of your fleet, you are also taking care of your drivers. Mechanical problems are frustrating for drivers, and no one wants to waste their time being broken down at the side of the road. Furthermore, performing regular maintenance on your fleet shows your drivers that you care about their safety – and this can help lead to better job satisfaction and less turnover in your business.

Customer satisfaction

And finally, when you have a well-maintained fleet, you are naturally going to have happier customers as well. This is because you will have fewer delays in pickups and deliveries due to mechanical issues. When a customer hires a trucking company, they want to know that goods will be delivered on time and without issue – and proper maintenance helps to make that possible.

Proper maintenance helps to give your company a good reputation with customers so that they will choose you over the competition and remain happy with your service.
