Why is an Air Brakes Course Important for Truck Drivers?

Jerit Justin • February 24, 2022

If you want to have a career driving a commercial vehicle, chances are that the vehicle that you drive is going to have air brakes. While you might be skilled at driving a pick-up truck or other types of passenger vehicles, driving a truck that has air brakes is considerably different.

Air brakes are important in large commercial vehicles because they make the vehicle safer. However, if you do not know how to use air brakes properly, it can be difficult and even more dangerous. You may even risk causing damage to the engine if the air brakes are applied incorrectly.

As part of your license exam when you go to get your commercial license, you will need to pass a section of the test that relates specifically to air brakes. Without the proper knowledge of air brakes and how to use them, you will not be able to pass this portion of the test.

At Trukademy, we understand the importance of air brakes, and through our Air Brakes Course, you will gain the knowledge that you need to pass the air brakes portion of your license exam. You will also gain the confidence you’ll need to drive a vehicle that has air brakes which will help to set you up for a rewarding career in the trucking industry.

What will you learn in Trukademy’s Air Brakes Course?

When you enroll in the Air Brakes Course at Trukademy, you will learn the following skills:

  • Learn how to ensure that you have the minimum necessary air pressure for your air brakes systems. (This is at least 85 psi for a bus and 100 psi for a commercial truck)
  • How to monitor the buildup rate of your air pressure. (At 600 to 900 rpm, it should take a maximum of two minutes for the air pressure to go from 85 psi to 100 psi).
  • How to ensure that you have the right amount of air pressure for your compressor.
How an Air Brakes Course Helps You Prepare for Your License Exam

With the Trukademy Air Brakes Course, you will be well prepared for the air brakes portion of your exam. In the knowledge section of the exam, you will need to take one of three variations:

  • Truck air brake systems
  • Trailer air brake systems
  • Both
In the practical session, you will need to take one of two variations:

  • Truck only
  • Truck and trailer

Depending on what version of the license exam you’ll be taking, the Trukademy Air Brakes Course can be customized to suit your needs.
