Why take an hours of service course

What is an Hours of Service course?

The Hours of Service course teaches drivers to fully understand and put into practice, Canada’s Hours of Service Regulations. These rules are designed to train drivers to reduce the severity and incidence of injuries, reduce collisions, reduce associated costs to society and save lives.


What will You Learn?

Participants of the course will learn the Ministry of Transportation’s Hours of Service requirements. This includes the Daily requirements, Mandatory off-duty time, Cycle requirement, and reset, and participants will learn the Daily Log requirements, as well as exemptions to certain regulations. Scheduling and dispatching are helpful topics that are also covered in the course.

Other topics of importance are understanding fatigue and our body clocks. Drivers need to know when driving is not allowed and sleeper berth requirements. There are exemptions for adverse driving conditions and emergencies, that are a “must” for a driver to know. Regulations that apply to certain vehicles, and those that are exempt, will also be on the list for learning during this course.

Courses like this one, cover all the specifics of the limits and regulations while in a classroom. Once finished, a participant should have a full understanding of the Hours of Service regulations, documents required, and driver, shipper, and carrier responsibilities. You will also learn about the responsibilities of managers, dispatchers, and safety officers.

You will want to pass the course and attain a Certificate of Completion. The certificate is valid for three years.
